Woman Killed, Infant Injured in Collision Between Vehicle and Amish Buggy


 

NEWPORT, NY — Tragedy struck on Butler Road in the town of Newport on the afternoon of October 28, 2024, when a Jeep Renegade collided with an Amish buggy, leaving one dead and a child injured.



According to the New York State Police, the incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. when Andrew Bienkowski, 36, of Newport was driving eastbound in a 2017 Jeep Renegade and struck the rear of an Amish buggy traveling in the same direction.



The impact ejected both occupants of the buggy, 31-year-old Rebecca Swartzentruber and her one-year-old daughter, Mattie. Tragically, Rebecca Swartzentruber was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mattie was transported to Wynn Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.



Bienkowski, the driver of the Jeep, was uninjured in the crash.



State Police were joined at the scene by the Newport Fire Department, Schuyler Volunteer Fire Company, and Kuyahoora Valley Ambulance. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
