ROME, NY – March 10, 2025 – A woman was injured after being dragged by an Amtrak passenger train in Rome on Monday afternoon, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.
At approximately 3:50 p.m., Road Patrol Deputies responded to a train-versus-pedestrian accident on the CSX Railroad tracks between the Rome train station on Martin Street and the Route 49 overpass near East Dominick Street.
An initial investigation determined that the woman was walking along the train tracks when her backpack was caught by a passing Amtrak train. She was dragged alongside the train and tracks for a short distance before the backpack tore free, releasing her.
The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Wynn Hospital for treatment. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and criminal charges will be filed at a later time.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that it is a criminal offense to be on railroad property or the right-of-way.
Responding agencies included AmCare Ambulance, the Rome Fire Department, Rome Police, New York State Police, and CSX personnel.
