Trooper Severely Injured in Collision During Traffic Stop

COLONIE, NY – At approximately 12:28 p.m. on November 2, 2024, a New York State Trooper sustained serious injuries after being struck by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop on I-87 (Northway) southbound near the exit 6-7 off-ramp in Colonie, NY.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Trooper had stopped a vehicle due to a Vehicle and Traffic Law violation, which resulted in the vehicle being prepared for towing. As the Trooper and a tow truck operator were loading the vehicle onto the tow truck, a passing pick-up truck collided with them.
The tow truck operator sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation. The Trooper, who sustained severe injuries, was taken to Albany Medical Center, where they are currently undergoing further evaluation.
Following the incident, the driver of the pick-up truck, along with multiple witnesses, stopped at the scene and contacted 911. The driver is now in State Police custody as investigators work to determine the full details of the incident.
State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
