ROME, NY — A welfare check for Lindell M. Reed, 36, escalated into a dangerous series of events late Sunday night, resulting in a police officer being injured and Reed facing felony charges.
On November 24, 2024, the Rome Police Department received reports that Reed had been using drugs and alcohol for several days without sleep, exhibiting erratic behavior. Known for past altercations with law enforcement and often carrying a knife, Reed was deemed a potential risk. A BOLO "Be On the Look Out" alert was issued for Reed and the vehicle he was reportedly operating.
Around 11:19 PM, Reed arrived at the Rome Police station and engaged with officers. It was determined he was unfit to drive, but before further action could be taken, Reed re-entered his vehicle. Officers attempted to stop him, but Reed fled, dragging one officer approximately two blocks along N. James Street before the officer was thrown from the vehicle during a high-speed turn.
The injured officer was transported to Rome Health with non-life-threatening injuries, including a lower leg injury, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Reed continued to drive recklessly, prompting officers to call off the pursuit for public safety concerns. Hours later, at approximately 8:30 AM, Reed and his vehicle were located on Beilby Road. With the assistance of the Special Response Team, he was taken into custody without incident.
Reed has been charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, a Class D felony, and was remanded to the Oneida County Jail on $10,000 bail following his arraignment in Rome City Court. Additional charges are expected.
