GEDDES, NY — The New York State Fair, a popular attraction that typically operates until 11 p.m. each night, was forced to close early on Sunday evening following reports of a mass chaos incident.
At 8:38 p.m., State Police stationed at the fairgrounds received a call reporting possible shots fired between the midway and the concert area at Suburban Park. Just three minutes later, at 8:41 p.m., a second call was received, this time reporting possible shots fired at the eatery building.
State Troopers quickly responded to both locations to investigate the reports. After thorough searches and investigations at both sites, authorities found no evidence of shots being fired and confirmed that there were no injuries reported.
Statement from the NYS Fair:
“After consulting with law enforcement, the decision was made to close the fair early on Sunday night out of an abundance of caution after New York State Police received reports of violence within the fairgrounds. The Fair is continuing to work with law enforcement and emergency personnel to assess the situation.
“The safety of fairgoers, staff, and vendors is the highest priority of The Great New York State Fair. Any further inquiries should be directed to the New York State Police.”
The New York State Fair is expected to reopen on schedule for its final day of the season, but additional security measures may be implemented to reassure visitors of their safety. The State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
