Large Police Presence in East Utica Following ShotSpotter Activation

Updated: Sep 21, 2024

UTICA, NY — A large police response was dispatched to an East Utica neighborhood late Friday night following a ShotSpotter gunshot detection system activation.

Around 11:15 p.m., Utica Police were alerted by dispatchers that the system had detected four gunshots in the area. Officers quickly arrived on the scene, focusing their attention on the 700 block of South Street, near the corner of South Street and Belmont Avenue.

Minutes after the alert, one officer could be heard over the radio, stating, "I'm going to have a scene," indicating that evidence of gunfire had likely been found at the location. Multiple patrol cars were positioned strategically, with officers seen taking cover behind their vehicles. Flashing lights from patrol cars were directed at several windows of a nearby house, suggesting that it was a focal point in their investigation.

As of now, no further details about suspects, injuries, or arrests have been released.

This incident marks one of the first major activations of the ShotSpotter technology, which the City of Utica activated earlier in the day to help police respond quickly to gunfire and reduce violence in neighborhoods.
