Updated: Dec 22, 2024

Albany, NY – December 21, 2024 – Governor Kathy Hochul has directed the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to fire 13 correctional officers and one nurse involved in the alleged fatal assault of Robert L. Brooks, a 43-year-old inmate at the Marcy Correctional Facility.

The incident, described by officials as "extremely disturbing," reportedly unfolded while Brooks was handcuffed. According to reports, officers accused Brooks of attempting to bite one of them, leading to a violent response. Brooks was allegedly knocked unconscious during the assault and beaten again after being revived. He died the following day at Wynn Hospital.

Body camera footage of the incident has been reviewed by investigators and is expected to provoke widespread outrage when made public.

One officer, reportedly the primary aggressor in the attack, identified as Anthony Farina, resigned during the investigation. The remaining 13 officers, along with a nurse who failed to intervene, now face termination.

The employees involved include:

Correctional Officers: Matthew Galliher, Nicholas Anzalone, David Kingsley, Nicholas Kieffer, Robert Kessler, Michael Fisher, Christopher Walrath, Michael Along, Shea Schoff, and David Walters.

Sergeants: Michael Mashaw and Glenn Trombley.

Nurse: Kyle Dashnaw.

Authorities have executed multiple search warrants at the homes of the officers involved, seeking additional evidence, including clothing with blood.

Further details about the incident and the ongoing investigation are expected to be released.
