UTICA, NY – November, 15, 2024 – Shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday evening, Utica Fire crews responded to a structure fire reported at 1609 Howard Avenue.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke pouring from the first and second floors of the residence. Searches of the building confirmed that no occupants were inside at the time of the incident. Four adult residents were displaced and are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The fire was contained to two rooms on the first floor, but smoke damage extended throughout the structure.
Efforts to combat the blaze were hindered by two nearby inoperable fire hydrants, prompting the declaration of a second alarm. Additional apparatus and personnel were dispatched to the scene to support firefighting efforts.
One firefighter sustained a cut to the wrist and was transported to Wynn Hospital for treatment. After receiving care, the firefighter returned to duty later in the evening.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Utica Fire Marshal’s Office.
No further injuries were reported.
