Updated: Sep 21, 2024

UTICA, NY – Multiple fire companies were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 510 Nichols Street early this morning around 1:50 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a large 2.5-story wood-frame house with heavy fire pouring from a second-floor window, burning through the exterior wall and extending into the attic.

Due to the rapidly growing fire, a second alarm was immediately called, bringing additional Utica Fire Department (UFD) crews to the scene. Firefighters quickly stretched multiple lines to the second floor and attic, successfully knocking down the bulk of the flames. Extensive overhaul operations were necessary to extinguish lingering hot spots.

Upon arrival, all occupants were reported to be out of the building. Fire crews conducted thorough searches to confirm this, and no victims were found. Firefighters rotated in and out of the building, continuing overhaul efforts. Several small fires were discovered throughout the structure and were extinguished. The entire building was ventilated to clear smoke and ensure safety.

The Utica Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire, with UFD crews providing assistance.

Assisting agencies included the Utica Police Department and National Grid.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Utica Fire Marshal’s Office.
