Brooklyn, NY – December 22, 2024 – A man considered a person of interest is in police custody following a shocking incident Sunday morning in which a woman sleeping aboard a train was set on fire. The horrifying act, captured on surveillance camera, occurred on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station.
The victim, discovered around 7:30 a.m., was found fully engulfed in flames. Responding officers pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Authorities have not released her identity as the investigation continues.
Later in the day, the person of interest was apprehended on another train after three high school students spotted the alleged suspect. When detained, the man had a lighter in his possession, which police believe was used to commit the crime.
“This person carried out one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a Sunday afternoon press conference.
Police revealed that Sebastian Zapeta arrived in the U.S. from Guatemala in 2018 and had been living in a shelter. He reportedly has no known criminal record in New York. His identity has not been released.
Investigators are working to uncover the motive behind this disturbing act.
